Jerry Corley Talks Comedy Structure
Comedy instructor Jerry Corley briefly discusses comedy structure with the audience during a class showcase at the comedy store.
A Note From Jerry
In my experiences on the road, in the studio, in writer’s rooms and in meetings with comedy writing legends, I’ve collected and refined joke techniques, comedy formulas and performance techniques and have laid them out in a way that allows the beginner to understand the science behind the art and for the experienced writer or comedian to add to his or her experience and heighten the response received from an audience. My sole goal is to provide the comedian or comedy writer with all the tools they need to truly command their ability to write jokes and comedy routines on anything they want, whenever they desire.
There are few things in my life I am more passionate about than comedy. I try to share this with all my students in my 8-week comedy classes, weekend comedy seminars and private coaching sessions (in person or via Skype). The process works! Here is an example going back 20 years. Here is my first television appearance on A&E’s An Evening at the Improv which I booked after my very first audition for Bud Friedman, owner of the world-famous “Improvisation.”

Comedian and Stand Up Comedy Clinic student JC Morgan, also winner of the "Funniest Comic in L.A." contest, was recently asked to appear on Showtime for a special they are shooting on 'pot' comedy. JC is a very talented writer and comedian and is a perfect example of a student who works hard and applies the techniques taught in Jerry Corley's classes. He gets noticed, wins comptetitions and now is doing his first special for T.V.! This is all in less than two years.
woooow I love your lessons. I hope you will change my life. I want to be a stand up comedian.
Thanks for the comment Isaac!
I hope I can help you in some way. Let me know if I can answer any questions for you regarding stand up comedy writing or the business.
very interesting, and very helpful, but my question is how long is a normal stage time?
Intriguing. I’m currently writing a comedy internet show. Maybe, I can use this to help me out.
Normal stage time varies. In L.A. most comics are getting 5-10 minute sets. Occasionally a 20 minute set. On the road, feature acts get about 30 minutes, while headliners get around 45-1hr. Your basic T.V. set could be 4 – 6 minutes on network or variety (Conan, Letterman, etc.) Comedy Central, you could be doing 15, 20, 30 minute special sets.
Hi Ryan, just to let you know, the techniques and structures I teach are applicable to script writing, sketch writing, columns, blogs, etc. Ultimately if you apply it in your speech or in your writing, you can increase the humor output substantially just by understanding the 12 Major comedy structures. Let me know if I can help in any way!
Hook me up, Dude. Do you have your internet show online yet? Love to check it out!
Not yet. Working on the script.
I must say, he is truly great, I definetely have a great time learning from Jerry each and every lessons-PROUD STUDENT.
Jerry has been helping me for a few months. We have regular skype sessions, a lifeline for a guy stationed in Okinawa Japan. He is the best! He has helped me write several stand ups, my sitcom, and one helluva Mother’s day card. Thanks Jerry!
Life is very interesting to me because life can end at any moment in time. It’s like going to work and falling off a skyscraper it’s not expected. It’s like going to war you never know when you get hit or if you do. Take people who drink and drive for an example, that’s just living it up…like the movie Super bad when the cops were drinking.
I always thought you are either funny or you’re not. Had no idea comedy could be taught.

Just the mechanics is what he is after. To be funny that is something that is natural to you

Jerry Corley any classes in chicago… or ther all in los angeles…
I have been researching and trying to dissect everything I can on how to structure jokes…This is the best website and info I have found so far…I have been all over the internet, read several books, watched you tube clips until my eyes hurt, and this is by far the most informative when it comes to stand up comedy. I have already learned a few things that no one is talking about. I’m sold….I will be reading every word on this website…oh, by the way…Tonight was my first ever time doing stand up. I made a mistake by winging it…but accomplished my main goal , which was seeing if I had the you know what’s to get up there…Now its off to actually write and rehearse then perform some jokes…I’ll keep you posted
Steve, thanks for the very cool comment. Keep in mind if you ever have any questions that haven’t been answered yet, just drop me a line. Always willing to try to help! Comedy Rocks!
Jose Power thanks for your questions Jose, I would suggest a class. There should be some in Chicago. There’s tons of open mics as well. A class can help you create your first 5-7 minutes. If you want we can set up Skype lessons. We can have to to 5 minutes of material in a few sessions and you’ll be up at the clubs in no time!
Read the blog too! Lot’s of FREE stuff on there to help you write tight jokes. http://www.standupcomedyclinic.com/comedy-blog/
Danelle, you’re a rock star Dude. Every time we have a skype session you make me laugh. Man we’ve written some solid material together. Can’t wait to do more!
Thanks for the comment Chris. It’s been a blast skyping with you and creating material. You’re one funny Marine!
